3 pieces of advice if you want to start your own business or go freelance
Quitting your full time job and going freelance, or taking the leap to start your own business is a BIG step. Massive. There is so much that needs to be considered before doing so, yet I haven’t come across one freelancer or business owner who has regretted it, including myself. So, what’s the secret in successfully going freelance/starting your own business?
Everyone has a slightly different experience and way to go about things, but here is a bit of advise I would of given myself before taking the leap…
DON’T LET DISBELIEF OR DOUBT STEER YOU AWAY FROM YOUR END GOAL
Have belief in what you can do and your individual set of skills, no one else is quite like you or can do exactly what you do. You will end up surprising yourself again and again, and as time goes on you will get a clearer understanding of what you’re capable of, as well as your worth. Confidence will continue to grow over time, but you need the initial boost of faith to get you off the ground.
THERE’S GOING TO BE DAYS WHERE YOU HAVE A MOMENT OF WEAKNESS AND QUESTION EVERYTHING THAT YOU’RE DOING
This is normal, everyone has these kind of days! There’s going to be tricky moments with clients, pieces of work that you hate, softwares playing games with you, nothing is plain sailing, life isn’t like that. But it’s knowing how to deal with these moments and remembering that they are just moments. Moments past, clients will come and go, projects will end, and tomorrow is a new day!
GET YOURSELF OUT THERE!
With being freelance or having your own business, you’re not only trying to sell your service but also yourself! Make your business personal, build a loyal audience and let people know what you can do! Tell everyone you meet what your goal is, you’ll be surprised how many people offer to help you reach it.
And remember, you’re never alone. Self-employment in the UK has grown increasingly in the last few years, so the likelihood of someone you know who has been in the exact same situation as you is incredibly high! The community is huge! And you are just as uniquely qualified to build your business as them.
