Telling a Visual Story - how to create a mood board

Hey there, fellow dreamers and creators! Today, we're delving into the world of mood boards and how they can serve as a powerful tool in shaping your brand's visual identity, or simply communicating a concept for a marketing campaign, event or campaign. Whether you're a budding entrepreneur or a seasoned business owner, mastering the art of mood board creation is essential for best visual communication.

Got a project in mind and want to get in touch?

So, what exactly goes into crafting a compelling mood board? Let's break it down step by step:

1. Setting the Vibe:

It all starts with setting the right tone. Consider the atmosphere you want to create – is it cosy and intimate, or sleek and sophisticated? Choose colours, textures, and imagery that reflect the essence of your brand and the experience you want to offer your customers. Remember those brand values should be seen and understood visually - what imagery could capture these key areas?

2. Capturing the Essence:

Dive deep into what makes your brand unique. Showcase your products or services in action, highlight key features and benefits, and convey the values that drive your business forward. Remember, every image should tell a story and evoke emotion in your audience - you might even want to show an image of the target customer.

3. Adding Personality:

Lastly, bring in the personality with some sensory references. Imagine warm hues that not only look inviting but also evoke the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the taste of your favourite pastry. Picture textures so rich and tactile, that you can almost feel them beneath your fingertips. And let's not forget about the sounds – from the hustle and bustle of a busy street to the soothing sounds of nature. Authenticity is key to building trust and forming genuine connections with your customers, so showing the brand personality is key.

4. Layout:

Ensure you layout reflects the theme - is it scrapbook-style with overlapped imagery or is it a clean crisp grid? Will you include text as well as imagery? What is the end purpose of your board? If its going to be shared, it might be important to have it in a standardised format like A4.

When curating your mood board, consider engaging all the senses to generate a comprehensive range of image ideas. Here's how you can incorporate each sense:

- Sight: Explore visuals that reflect the look and feel of your purpose, from stunning landscapes to captivating product shots. If you could summarise your brand using one shot of a camera what would you photograph?

- Sound: Ask yourself what sound your communication would be? It might sound (excuse the pun!) odd, but deciding if you are a big brass band, a hushed library or a school playground all evoke very different moods. Use images that evoke auditory sensations, such as bustling city streets or serene natural environments.

- Smell: Again, question your purpose/story - what would it smell like? Is it a cacophony of musk, incense and Oud, or is it the scent of piña coladas and sunscreen? Incorporate images that conjure up fragrant scents that reflect your brand, like freshly baked bread, blooming flowers, or aromatic coffee.

- Taste: Consider flavours when communicating your story. Is it more high end Michelin star plated art, or a wholesome roast dinner? These images might be used if relevant especially for events!

- Touch: Include textures and tactile elements that invite viewers to imagine the feel of your products, whether it's the softness of fabric or the smoothness of polished wood.

By engaging all the senses in your mood board, you'll create a truly immersive experience that captures the essence of your story and resonates with your audience on a deeper level.
