How to make redundancy into an opportunity ⚡️
They say dismissal from work is the 8th most stressful things that can happen to a person, measuring 47 on the Holmes and Rahe stress scale. Now, as much as being made redundant can have various reasons that don’t mean you were fired, it’s still a loss of a job.
I’ve been made redundant, and I want to start my own business…
So many of our clients have experienced redundancy in the last three years, with factors like the pandemic, Brexit, recession and unfortunately the outbreak of war. Our founder, Lucianne, can relate, she’s sharing her story in the hope it might help someone else manage this big change in their life.
Calling my best friend and hearing the words, “this is a good thing” was exactly the response I needed to the words “I’m being made redundant”.
She was right, I had done everything I could at the company, from producing high-quality design work, faster and with less headcount than ever before. I wrote my annual appraisal, with the view to push for a pay review and a promotion only to be met with the notion of redundancy.
I was temporarily heartbroken, but after I hung up the phone with my bestie I realised this was a huge opportunity to make my daydreams a reality. I decided to request sooner dismissal, as I was fortunate enough to be offered a package by my employer that would see me through to the end of the year and get my own business up and running as soon as I could.
Now I understand, that this isn’t the case for everyone. I was exceptionally lucky with my financial situation and so I was enabled to make things happen quickly. But I would urge anyone who redundancy is happening, to reflect on what you’d like out of life. Is there something you want to do that the 9-5 wouldn’t allow for? Can you make some action to make it happen now you have some unexpected downtime?
A lot of my clients in 2020-2022 have shared similar stories. Many say the same 8 words “ it’s the best thing that could have happened”. These new business owners took redundancy and flipped the knock to their confidence and worries about the future around to seize an opportunity. They took action to start businesses they’d only dreamed of, cos let’s be honest, when is a good time to do a career pivot if not being unceremoniously kicked off your expected path? And you could do that too.
With that being said, consider me the person on the other end of the phone saying to you,
“THIS IS A GOOD THING”
